WSOP Main Event Day 1a; So it Begins

2016-wsop--main-eventThe biggest event of the year kicked off on Saturday, July 10 at the 47th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP). Event #68: $10,000 MAIN EVENT No-Limit Hold’em Championship began with the first of three starting flights at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Day 1a gathered 764 entries which is a nice boost to last year’s 741. After chips were bagged at the end of play, 567 survivors secured their seat for Day 2. American Gary Sewell bagged the top stack with 312,500 from his 50,000 starting stack. Alvaro Lopez (306,200), Scott Neuman (226,000), Sean Case (222,500), and Matthew Ashton (212,600) round out the top five.

There were 16 Canadians advancing to Day 2. Fredericton, NB’s Ryan MacKinnon leads the Canadian contingent with two more starting flights left to be played. MacKinnon and Vancouver, BC’s Edmund Chan were able to bag top 30 stacks. Here is how the Canadian contingent stack up after Day 1a:

Unfortunately Canadian pros Mark Radoja and Greg Mueller did not survive the day. Radoja busted in every poker player’s worst nightmare; [AxAx] < [KxKx]. According to Radoja the pot was worth 120,000 chips.
