The Red Shores Racetrack and Casino in Charlottetown, PEI hosted their inaugural Deep Freeze Bounty Tournament on Saturday and Sunday February 25-26, 2012. A total of 150 players from PEI and neighbouring provinces competed. Although the event’s name defies sub-zero temperature, the Deep Freeze is poised to become one of Atlantic Canada’s “hottest” tournaments.
The 2-day event featured two80-player max qualifying Day 1 sessions on Saturday, one starting at 10AM and the other at 6PM. Players were served up with $10,000 starting chip stacks to commence play and the blind levels were 30 minutes long throughout the tournament.
Players competed for a $52,500 prize pool plus a share of an additional $7,500 in bounty prizes. The winner of the tournament, Shant Thaper, from Saint-John, New Brunswick walked away with $16,400 in first place prize money and a Deep Freeze Bounty Tournament watch. Shant beat out rival Ryan Drake in heads up.
Both 2nd place Ryan Drake and 5th place Matt Wilkins made their second major final table at the Red Shores over the past 12 months, having already placed 7th and 3rd respectively at the 2011 Atlantic Canada Poker Championships.
Players who knocked out fellow competitors won $50 bounties for each player they knocked out so this added spice to the game.
As always the Red Shores served up a great tournament and it was a great atmosphere all around.
