Recent developments in the poker industry have put a strain on cash flows at some of the top online poker rooms and as a result online poker sponsorships have been affected for many professional poker players. UB and Absolute Poker were the first to announce a major cut in their poker sponsorships last week when they dropped pros Joe Sebok, Prahlad Friedman, Eric “Basebaldy” Baldwin, Maria Ho, Brandon Cantu, Tiffany Michelle, Scott Ian, “Hollywood” Dave Stann, Adam “Roothlus” Levy, Bryan Devonshire and Trishelle Cannatella. This has also brought into question the effectiveness of handing out so many sponsorships to players that require them to wear patches and make appearances at live poker events in hopes of getting some media attention for the poker rooms. Many sponsored players fail to deliver results. More announcements are expected from PokerStars and Full Tilt laying off pros, especially since patch deals in the USA are a waste of money now.
But just as some rooms are taking this opportunity to trim their payrolls, others are hiring. In Canadian poker news, a new poker employer has emerged… Loto-Quebec’s online poker site EspaceJeux.
Last week, Loto-Quebec launched a new poker themed lottery called Lotto Poker aimed at capturing the youth market for their lottery games and in just the first week managed to generate sales of over $2.4 million. The ad message for Lotto Poker consisted of a licensing of the hit song “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga who was paid a $300,000 royalty fee for using her song. Well there is a new Lady working with Loto-Quebec now in relation to their online poker website Espacejeux, the very talented Laurence Grondin “LadyLuck” who has just been announced as the site’s first sponsored Poker Pro.
Laurence Grondin is no stranger to poker and is a staple in the Montreal poker scene where she often attends tournaments and has also played to benefit charities. Laurence’s best finish at a live tournament was at the 2009 World Series of Poker finishing 3rd in the $2,000 NLH Event #36 and winning $237,537.
As a Poker Pro for Espacejeux, she will also represent the online poker site both online playing under the nickname “LadyLuck” and at land based tournament and she will be sponsored at this year’s WSOP events.
CanadaPoker.com has met with Laurence on a number of occasions and she is a very likeable and down to earth person and we wish her the best of luck with Espacejeux and at the WSOP.
