The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has announced that they will soon be launching their online gambling site PlayOLG.ca which will let Ontarians gamble online from the comfort of home. Ontarians will be able to play casino games and buy LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 6/49 and ENCORE on a safe and secure website.
Ontario is the latest province to join the online gambling initiative since BC and Quebec first launched three years prior, followed since by Manitoba and the Atlantic Provinces.
PlayOLG have e-mailed their player database over 50 thousand strong advising them that real-money play is coming over the next few weeks and would like them to test the new games and provide feedback.
As part of the responsible gaming initiative, players on the new site will be forced to set weekly deposit limits, there will be optional session time limits, casino stop-loss limits, and lottery purchase limits. There are also gambling check questionnaires and self-exclusion instructions.
Although casino and lottery games will be offered, there has been no mention of online poker nor whether PlayOLG will join the other provinces in the Canadian Poker Network which has had difficulties competing with larger global poker sites thanks to more advanced software and their ability to pool global liquidity and offer large scale online tournaments. PokerStars currently dominates the market for poker in Canada and is said to own a majority of the estimated 500,000 Canadian offshore gambling accounts.
OLG estimates that it will earn profits of over $375 million during the first five years of operation. It will likely be the largest regulated online gambling site in North America to date.
