The final table of the first event of the EPT Barcelona, the €50k Super High Roller concluded yesterday. It was stacked with talent, predominantly of the younger variety, including the 20-year-old chip leader Ole Schemion and Mike McDonald who had ridden a turbulent short stack journey the day before, but it was the two veterans Erik Seidel and Vitaly Lunkin of Russia who made it to the heads-up.
Day 2 had ended in the early hours Sunday morning after 10 long levels which weren’t quite able to burst the bubble. Eight players had to come back later on Sunday with just seven places waiting to be paid. Five of were relatively short stacked with just Schemion, Lunkin and Mike McDonald of Waterloo, Ontario looking comfortable. Timothy Adams from Burlington, Ontario was lagging marginally behind the pack. He never got a chance to catch up and was the unfortunate bubble boy in eighth. November-niner David Benefield was also playing.
McDonald finished in 4th place in a somewhat painful hand. McDonald opened with K♦Q♦ and was called by Lunkin with 6♣6♥ and Steve O’Dwyer in the big blind who held king-jack off suit and was lucky not to hit. Not so McDonald on a Q♥Q♠6♦ flop. The chips were always going to go in, but it wasn’t on the flop. McDonald bet-called as Lunkin played it fast. McDonald then check-raised all-in on the 8♠ turn and Lunkin made a quick call. A 6♠ on the river gave Lunkin quads. McDonald adds €269,400 to his impressive pool of live tournament cashes.
Russian Vitaly Lunkin was the first major winner of EPT Season 10 as he knocked out Hall of Famer Erik Seidel. Lunkin has two WSOP bracelets to his credit and now almost $5.5 million in career live earnings
Seidel, one of the most successful poker players of all time, pocketed another €557,100 for his runner-up finish. His career total now tops $18.4 million
Other Canadians who played the Super High Roller event included Jonathan Duhamel, Mike Watson and Marc-Andre Ladouceur.
