Two of the biggest personalities in the game squared off against each other in the 2013 NBC Heads-Up Championship taking place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. After starting with a field of 64 players who made a $20,000 buy-in on Friday, the final two players left standing last night were, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow and Phil Hellmuth. Phil was in contention to set another record by being the only player to win this event twice, but it was not in the cards.

The final heads up battle went to three matches. Matusow took the first match quickly. A coinflip hand saw Matusow’s A-Q connect an ace on the board against Phil’s pair of 5’s.

Hellmuth took the second match which came down to a couple of big hands. Phil picked up a pair of 10’s to beat Mike’s pair of 2’s to win match two.

Matusow controlled the third match from start to end. The deciding hand happened with blinds at 8,000/16,000 as Matusow min-raised and Hellmuth called to see a flop. Hellmuth check-called 30,000 and the turn was the , bringing a check from Hellmuth and a bet of 105,000 from Matusow.

Hellmuth eventually put in all of his chips in a total bet of 357,000 and Matusow eventually decided to call with   for a naked flush draw, which was a fair bit behind Hellmuth’s with one card to come. Looked as if Matusow planned it, though, as the on the river completed his flush and sealed his victory. The win earned Matusow the third largest cash of his tournament career and his first six-figure payday since a third place finish at Bay 101 in 2011.

The road to the final 2 was not an easy one as both opponents faced some pretty stiff competition playing a total of four levels from the round of 32 down to the semi finals.

Phil Hellmuth, tried to become the first repeat champion for this event since first winning it in 2005 along with $500,000. Phil Hellmuth beat Joe Serock in the Semi Finals but there were 26 other match ups that took place on Saturday.

Hellmuth reached the final after defeating Mike Sexton, Justin Smith, Doc Sands, Eugene Katchalov, and Joe Serock.

Matusow defeated Michael Mizrachi, Viktor Blom, Barry Greenstein, John Hennigan, and Scott Seiver.
