Interview with World Poker Tour Montreal Champion Jonathan Roy
CP: Tell us a little bit about your road to the WPT Montreal.
JR: I’ve been playing a couple of years for fun. I wanted to play the WPT ontreal because it’s close to home. I took a year off of school to play some poker. I’ve been playing a lot of live tournaments recently and it helped me to prepare for this.
CP: Is this your first major victory?
JR: It’s my second win this year, I won a side event in Monaco for 67,000 euros.
CP: Before the heads up battle, we spoke with Jonathan Duhamel who is good friends with both you and Pascal and he wished the best for both of you equally. We specifically asked him who he thought was the favourite to win. He mentioned that while he felt that Pascal was the stronger overall player, you were the better Heads Up player. Is this an accurate statement and did this help you?
JR: Yes it is. Pascal is a great player and I play a lot of heads up and at first it helped me a lot. Pascal didn’t know what to expect of me but I knew exactly what to do in this situation. After he was down chips, he grinded back up and in the end it was pretty much a coinflip.
CP: What does this victory mean to you?
JR: I’m still absorbing the victory but it feels like a nice accomplishment for me.
CP: Prior to the heads up match, we noticed you smiling a lot and making some facial expressions to Pascal anytime you were up against him. Was there some psychology to this?
JR: No, actually we know each other very well. Prior to final table we both wanted to make it to heads up against each other. We have a lot of respect for each other but we are happy that somebody from Quebec won the tournament.
