The last weekend in April marked a marked the 900 “millionth”, that’s right, a nine with six zeros behind it, tournament to take place on PokerStars – to celebrate, a special $109 event was held with a million dollar guaranteed prizepool and 14 hours after things kicked off, more than $152,500 would end up with Edmonton player Talal “earlgrey23” Shoush, roughly 14 hours after the things kicked off. For those interested in how that works out hourly, (as oddly enough or not some do ask for the math when hearing these stories), it’s roughly $10,900 for every 60 minutes of play.
In the wee morning hours, top Alberta poker player Paul Brar sent out the message that he was watching a friend running very deep, in the deep, bringing those in the player community still up and not already watching to the virtual rail for an exciting sweat as the 18,711 field whittled it’s way down to a final table.
The players soon found themselves in a 3 way ICM deal that left all 3 players with reasonably close to even money, while only the title remaining in the middle to play for.
Finally, at about 2:35am local time, he got the job done, announcing excitedly on his FaceBook account; “Happy Happy Happy birthday to my amazing, beautiful, brilliant, supportive, funny and down right dope girlfriend…I love you so much I decided to ship the big one for you…” then telling friends “I have to say much thanks to everyone rooting for me…I really appreciate it, truly means the world…Thanks again everyone…Made the win a million times more special.
Shoush, a university student, has booked nearly $500,000 in combined live & online recorded career tournament winnings, the bulk of which has come on the virtual felts. Only a few weeks prior to his big score, Talal had parlayed an $1,100 entry in the CPT Spring Showdown into $3,300, after finishing 16th of 270 entrants. If his next morning tweet after the $109 is any indicator however, he hasn’t let his success on the felts stray his priorities just yet…
“Hard to sleep after the poker gods decide it’s your day. So I came straight to school. Damn, 5 years ago I’d be on a flight to Vegas.”
Hats off to you “Earl”!
