Over the years, I have been told many tips along the way on how to maintain good bankroll management. Thought it would be a good idea to make a post here so that people can add some bankroll management tips that they use on a regular basis that seem to help.
I will start it off with of course, playing within my bankroll. When I play a tournament it must be at maximum 5% of my bankroll, and if I am playing cash games, I always have atleast 20x the max buy-in to play. |

Another good tip I received is not to lose anymore than 3x max buy-in within one session.

dont bring too much money to a poker session, if you get on tilt you can loose more than you bargain for.

Be disciplined, set your limits. Win or lose that limit. for example, if your limit is 200, either win 200 or lose 200 and you are gone.

bankroll management could be the hardest thing to master for even the most skilled players, many experienced players go broke for all the wrong reasons. dealing with swings and being able to swallow your pride and move down in stakes are a huge part of keeping your head above water. the real question is: how many times have you gone broke trying to learn this lesson? probably 3 or 4 times myself!

When your not really feeling it, just dont play! A dollar lost is the same as a dollar earned so if you dont feel so hot and think it might be a losing day, dont put the money into play!

For live players, keeping books is a MUST, MUST, MUST! It can be as simple as writing -/+ on a calendar or using CardPlayers Stat tracker (awesome). I even write in other gambling losses, the key is be honest and accountable! So many players remember the good days but don't want to admit to the bad. We all have losing streaks and most times, if you are tracking it you can find a leak or two. BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS! 5% rule the grinder pointed out is a must, especially online. Most recreational players like myself don't have a separate account for poker, (Just pull some cash out of ATM), so even more important to track. I have friends that are even using I-Phone apps, so they remember to make notes right away, and don't just go home and get distracted.

How do you start a bankroll for live poker?
I would really like to play cash games at the casino, but it's kind of hard to have a safe bankroll when the lowest limits are 1/2. For buyin of 100 big blinds it's a good 200$ and to have at leat 20 buyin it would be 4000$. Should I shortstack at 30bb or 50bb which would make like 1500/2000$ it's still quite an investment to start. I'm very curious to test the grounds at the casino de Montréal to compare the skill level to Pokerstars or Fulltiltpoker. |

They say you should earn your initial bankroll outside of poker, just like you are saving up for a vacation. A lot of players grind up online, where lower NL stakes are available, or keep books and keep your winnings seperate until you can start a seperate account.
Also, for 1/2, I have heard 6k is a comfartable bankroll. Most say start with min buys for awhile anyway. |
