I think most players use the clock to determine the length of their sessions. I use orbits to determine the lenght of my sessions and to control my bankroll. 3 orbits are key for me. If nothing happens during that time frame I'll be down 4.5BB that tells me I'm out of sync with that table and I leave looking for a new table. That's my stop loss limit. If I'm in sync at a table and reach 4.5BB I'll continue until the blinds come round and I've already unclicked the autopost and leave. Anytime I'm up over 4.5BB I may not even wait that long. It's close enough to the +/- 10% rule. You'd be surprised at how effective this is in a downswing. It's also effective in controlling tilt. Suck outs, bad beats, and missed draws are always going to happen. Nothing I can do about it. As long as there isn't a steady diet of them then I'll have the bankroll left to recupe those losses during other sessions. Another thing I don't do is "turbo" anything. That to me is a bankroll killer devised by the sites exactly for that purpose. It's a coin flip extravaganza! I guess I have a "slow and steady wins the race" attitude when it comes to protecting my bankroll.
