All eyes have been fixated on London where the Who’s Who of the poker world are in attendance for back to back major tournaments. The WSOP Europe, the European Poker Tour and the English Poker Open (EPO) are being staged in London this month. The EPO, a single event tournament in its 2nd year with an impressive $1 Million prize pool, also managed to attract some of the pros and also served as an appetizer for Phil Laak who cashed £6,800 for 18th spot before going on to become the first WSOPE bracelet winner of 2010. The three tournaments were immediately preceded by the WPT London Poker Classic which ended on September 5th where Jake Cody of Great Britain won £273,783 ($442,000 CAD).
With all this poker commotion going on overseas in Pub country, the WPT Borgata Open in Atlantic City has been looming on the horizon, in part due to the absence of the poker star power we are used to seeing at these signature events. The Borgata Poker Open has been on since September 8 and runs through to the 23rd with a total of 21 events on the roster. To date, sixteen events have been played to near completion leading up to the much anticipated signature WPT Main Event which takes centre stage today on Saturday the 18th.
Some notable Canadians to date at the events are Gavin Smith and Chris Back (Kamloops, BC) who were busy yesterday in Event #14 $1,500 + $150 NLH with a $454,500 prize pool where for a good part of the event Gavin managed to keep up just short of the chip leader. At around 10PM, a million chip pot was created when Gavin picked up pocket aces against Scott Anderson’s pocket kings. A king spiked on the flip and left Gavin crippled with about 40,000. He was out 18th a few hands later, good for $4,409.
Gavin also played in a $2,000 Double Heads-Up tournament where he didn’t cash. Some other notables in the field were 14-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps, Nick Binger and 2009 Borgata Poker Open Champion Olivier Busquet.
The WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship Event #17 is a NLH $3,500 total buy-in with a Massive $2 Million Guaranteed Prize Pool.
