The 13th annual Canadian Poker Championships at Yellowhead Casino in Edmonton wrapped up on Sunday pulling together combined prize pools of more than $331,600 over it’s 5 No Limit Hold’em events.
Changing things up from standard series in Edmonton with a 2 starting day $1,100 Main Event proved to be the right recipe for a Thanksgiving long weekend series, drawing 161 entries to battle for a top prize of $44,600.
Local Calvin Hackewicz nearly doubled his tracked career winning total after defeating the poker room’s major tournament money leader Malcolm Bolger during heads up play in the Main Event; with this victory Calvin claims his first championship title and nearly $45,000 up top.
Hackewicz had previously made 8 final tables in Western Canadian series, including a 2nd and 5th place finishes in this same tournament over the years, making it even more fitting that he finally owns the bragging rights and bling for Event #4.
Also continuing to dominate in Edmonton was Basher Ramahi, who’s two final table finishes this time around included a win in the $300 No Limit Hold’em Event #5 for $9,150.
Basher won the Main Event at the 9th Annual Alberta Poker Championships at the start of the year for $50,000 and has also more than doubled his career totals over 2012; adding a combined $11,650 for his performances this week.
Adding to Ramahi’s celebration was a $17,300 win for friend Toufic Chehayben in Event #3, a $800 No Limit Hold’em. Toufic, also known as Troy, defeated a field of 79 entries to take the top prize, with notable Samuel Ngai also making a final appearance in 5th for $4,450.
Event #2, a $550 No Limit Hold’em was won by Azad Ismael who was the last player standing of 111 for $16,000 payday.
Event #1, a $300 No Limit Hold’em with 173 runners had a 1st place prize of $9,500 that was claimed by Garrett B.; we’ll have full results shortly to add as an update to this post.
Congratulations to all the players!
