The world renowned Aussie Millions Poker Championship kicked off yesterday at Melbourne Australia’s Crown Casino. The Aussie Millions has been a favourite tournament of poker players for ten years now due to its popularity and large prize pools. The fact that it’s about 26°C and summer in sunny Australia is a poker bonus for us Canadians despite the long flight to get there.
This year organizers are expecting a total prize pool in the AUD$20 million range. The championship includes more than 20 events, a high stakes cash game and AUD$100,000 ($98,000 CAD) High Roller challenge, all culminating with the AUD$10,000 Aussie Millions main event that begins Jan 23. Close to 1,000 players are expected to enter the main event this year.
Last year, Australian Tyron Krost won the main event title and AUD$2 million first prize at after defeating a final table that included famed female poker player Annette Obrestad and two Canadians poker players both from Toronto, Sorel Mizzi who picked up AUD$715,000 for his 3rd place finish and Peter Jetten who won AUD$350,000 and finished in 5th spot.
According to organizers, players like Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen, Antonio Esfandiari, Chris Ferguson, Tom Dwan and hometown favourite former WSOP Champion Joe Hachem are among those excpected to attend.
