In an unexpected, yet not surprising announcement, two of our countries leading poker entities have joined forces to bring the World Poker Tour back to Canada!
“We are thrilled to be adding two exciting new events to our Season XI schedule,” said WPT CEO Steve Heller.
“As our first event in the Southern Hemisphere, WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic is a ground-breaking step into uncharted territory for World Poker Tour, while WPT Montreal marks a long-awaited return to one of the great poker centers in the world.”
WPT Montreal is set to take place from November 23-26th 2012, with a $3,000+$300 Main Event that will carry along with it what is sure to be a sweet prize-pool, all the prestige of a being an official World Poker Tour stop.
According to WPT Blog, “the World Poker Tour returns to Canada for the first time since 2008 with the WPT Montreal event at the popular Playground Poker Club in Quebec. With its CAD $3,000 + $300 buy-in and opportunity for re-entry, this new WPT Main Event – sponsored by PartyPoker.net – is expected to draw some of the biggest names in the game, including Playground Poker representatives Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Laak, and Erik Cajelais.”
While the World Poker Tour probably needs no introduction, having made 22 stops around the globe over it’s tenth season, with Main Event prize-pools alone totaling roughly $45,000,000 combined.
By now Playground Poker Club is also not unfamiliar to most, as Montreal has been the most consistent hotspot of Canadian poker since they opened their doors in late December of 2010.
Just one look at the roster of top pros and up and comers that are part of their Players Poker Club speaks volumes to the high standards and world class poker the venue has been spreading. The vast majority of their special events have seen sell-out fields and we don’t expect that will change for their biggest venture yet!
Those avid players living in Ontario have also turned out in numbers at the club located just minutes from downtown Montreal, as for most, flying, driving or hoping a train are all readily available and affordable options to make the trip. For the rest of Canada, frequent seat sales to one of Canada’s most historic major cities can easily be found for around the same cost as flying to Las Vegas. Unlike playing in the USA however, not having to leave a 30% withholding tax on any big winnings should be the icing on the cake for those considering competing in this caliber of tournament.
Be sure to get in on some of the free bankroll boost up for grabs and just maybe you can parlay it all the way into a World Poker Tour title!
